Position Summary
The Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the company’s shop, ensuring construction equipment, tools, and fleet assets are maintained, repaired, and ready to support field operations. This role requires strong leadership, organization, and technical knowledge, as well as the ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced construction environment.
Working closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Safety, and Field Operations, the Shop Manager plays a key role in minimizing downtime, maintaining safety standards, and ensuring projects have the equipment and support they need to succeed.
Responsibilities
- Manage daily operations of the construction shop, including equipment maintenance, repairs, and scheduling of work.
- Supervise, train, and support shop personnel, including mechanics, technicians, and support staff.
- Plan and prioritize maintenance and repair activities to align with project schedules and operational needs.
- Oversee preventive maintenance programs for heavy equipment, vehicles, tools, and site support assets.
- Coordinate equipment mobilization and demobilization for projects, ensuring assets are job-ready and compliant.
- Track and manage shop inventory, tools, parts, and consumables to minimize downtime and unnecessary costs.
- Work closely with Project Managers and Superintendents to forecast equipment needs and resolve issues quickly.
- Ensure all work is performed in compliance with company safety policies, regulatory requirements, and manufacturer standards.
- Maintain accurate records related to maintenance, inspections, repairs, and equipment history.
- Manage relationships with vendors, service providers, and suppliers, including sourcing parts and arranging external repairs when required.
- Monitor shop performance, identify improvement opportunities, and implement efficiencies in processes and workflows.
- Support budgeting and cost control related to shop operations, repairs, and equipment maintenance.
- Participate in incident investigations and corrective actions related to equipment or shop activities.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and support standardization of shop procedures across the company.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in a construction shop, equipment maintenance, or fleet operations environment; supervisory or management experience strongly preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of heavy equipment, construction tools, vehicles, and maintenance practices.
- Proven ability to lead teams, prioritize work, and manage competing demands from multiple projects.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with a practical, hands-on approach.
- Solid communication skills with the ability to work effectively with field crews, supervisors, and leadership.
- Experience with maintenance tracking systems, work order management, and asset tracking is an asset.
- Familiarity with WorkSafeBC requirements and general occupational health and safety standards.
- Red Seal Heavy Duty Mechanic, or related trade certification is an asset.
- Valid driver’s license; Class 1 or 3 licence considered an asset.
